How to Clean a Fabric Sofa When You Have Pets
If you have pets, keeping a fabric sofa clean can feel impossible. Pet hair, odors, stains, and everyday dirt build up fast. The good news is that you don’t need professional equipment to keep your sofa fresh and hygienic.
First, remove all loose pet hair. Use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment, or a rubber brush if hair is stuck deep in the fabric. Always vacuum slowly to pull out as much hair as possible.
Next, check the sofa’s cleaning label. Most fabric sofas are marked with W (water-based cleaning), S (solvent-based cleaning), WS, or X. This label tells you what kind of cleaner is safe to use.
For water-safe fabrics, mix warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap. Lightly dampen a clean cloth and gently blot stained areas. Do not soak the fabric, as too much water can cause odors and damage.
Pet odors can be removed using baking soda. Sprinkle a thin layer over the sofa, let it sit for at least 30 minutes, then vacuum thoroughly. This helps absorb smells naturally.
For tougher stains, a mixture of white vinegar and water can be effective. Test it on a hidden area first, then blot carefully. Never scrub aggressively, as this can damage the fabric fibers.
Finally, allow the sofa to dry completely. Open windows or use a fan to speed up the drying process. Regular cleaning and quick action on stains will keep your fabric sofa clean even with pets in the home.
